The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) is the only land mammal native to Iceland. It arrived at the end of the last ice age. Reindeer were introduced from Norway in the 18th century and are not indigenous. The Icelandic horse has been isolated on the island since the 9th century and is genetically distinct from all European breeds. Horse importation to Iceland is permanently prohibited by law.
