Iceland's geology is built on two overlapping processes: the divergence of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and a deep mantle hotspot beneath the island. Together these produce 32 active volcanic systems, extensive geothermal fields, basaltic lava landscapes, and glaciers covering subglacial volcanoes. Iceland has approximately 90% basaltic bedrock.
