A jökulhlaup is a glacial outburst flood. When a volcano erupts beneath a glacier, the heat melts huge volumes of ice that pool and then burst free in a sudden torrent of water, ice, and rock. Iceland's subglacial volcanoes, such as Grímsvötn and Katla, are the usual sources.
