As of May 2026, no eruption is currently active. The most recent eruption — the ninth along the Sundhnúkur crater row on the Reykjanes Peninsula — began on 16 July 2025 and ended on 5 August 2025. However, researchers at Uppsala University reported in March 2026 that magma volume beneath Sundhnúkur has returned to pre-July 2025 levels, indicating another eruption is likely. Current live status is published at the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
