Within a 10-minute walk (800 m) of Harpa's main door, you can reach 22 of downtown Reykjavík's attractions. They include the Sun Voyager sculpture (9 minutes), the Settlement Exhibition (9 minutes), Hafnarhús art museum (7 minutes), Kolaportið flea market (6 minutes, weekends), and Austurvöllur square with the parliament (7 minutes). Most are free to look at, and the paid museums cost 1,400–3,990 ISK. The nearest is inside Harpa itself: Volcano Express, an immersive volcano film on motion seats on Floor K2, at 0 minutes. A visit takes up to 45 minutes in total, including a 10-minute flight.

How we measured "10 minutes"

Walking distances come from OpenStreetMap foot routing (OSRM, routing.openstreetmap.de). Each route starts at the path in front of Harpa's main south door (64.1500 N, 21.9333 W) and ends at the attraction's entrance or center as mapped in OpenStreetMap. Minutes are distance ÷ 80 m a minute, an easy pace, rounded to the nearest minute. Routes follow pavements and crossings, not straight lines, and that matters here: Þúfa, the grass mound across the harbor, is 493 m away in a straight line but 2.4 km on foot. Prices and hours were read on each venue's own site, checked for 5 November 2026. Where a site does not publish a figure, we say "check".

Three ways to use the list

In the rain: Volcano Express (0) → Hafnarhús (7) → Museum of Photography next door → Kolaportið at weekends (2 more minutes) → back to Harpa (6). Everything stays within about 600 m.

Reykjavík Old Harbour quays, an eight-minute walk west of Harpa
Reykjavík Old Harbour quays.

With an hour, on foot: Harpa → Sun Voyager (9) → back past Arnarhóll → Bæjarins Beztu → the Old Harbor quays → Harpa. That is about 2.8 km, or 36 minutes at 80 m/min, leaving about 25 minutes for stops.

Culture in two stops: the House of Collections (5) and the Settlement Exhibition (9 from Harpa) cover Icelandic art and Viking-age Reykjavík in about 90 minutes including walking. For longer plans, see our Reykjavík itinerary, and for the harbour area in depth, the Old Harbour and Harpa neighbourhood guide.

Notes on access and timing

  • On a Thursday (we checked the list for Thursday 5 November 2026): Hafnarhús stays open until 22:00, the Museum of Photography is open 10:00–18:00, the cathedral is open 10:00–14:00 and i8 from 12:00. Kolaportið is closed on weekdays. Hallgrímskirkja published a 16:00 nave closing for that day and closes for about an hour around noon on Thursdays.
  • Under-18s go free at the Art Museum, the City Museum sites and the National Gallery. Volcano Express charges 2,990 ISK for ages 4–12; the minimum age is 4, the minimum height is 100 cm, and under-12s must come with someone aged 18 or over. Walk-ins are welcome, with tickets at the door on K2 or online on tix.is; no booking fee. Prices and hours are on Admission & opening hours.
  • Step-free: Hafnarhús and Harpa publish step-free access with lifts, and Volcano Express is step-free with static front seats. Rainbow Street climbs uphill to Hallgrímskirkja. More in Accessible Reykjavík.
  • Cruise passengers: Miðbakki, the Old Harbour small-ship berth, is a 5–6 minute walk from Harpa. Large ships dock at Skarfabakki, about 4 km away: take a taxi, bus 16, or walk 45–55 minutes to Harpa, then use this list. See Skarfabakki cruise terminal.
